Becoming Jane (120 mins : UK : 2007 : cert PG)
”A woman, especially if she has the misfortune of knowing anything, should conceal it as well as she can.”
The year is 1795 and young Jane Austen is a feisty 20 year-old. She’s an emerging writer who already sees a world that exists beyond class and commerce and the making of a good, wholesome, marital match. Seeing beyond the pride and the prejudice of the age, she dreams of doing what was nearly unthinkable at the time – marrying for love.
Naturally, her parents are on the lookout for a wealthy, well appointed man to assure their daughter’s future financial and social standing – no matter what he’s like as a person. Mr Wisley, nephew to Lady Gresham, the formidable local aristocrat, is the very epitome of their expectations. But when Jane meets the roguish and decidedly non-aristocratic Tom LeFroy, sparks soon fly between them, along with sharp wit and repartee. His intellect and arrogance raise her ire – but eventually she’s knocked head over heels.
Now, with their flirtation flying in the face of good sense and prudish sensibility, they are faced with a terrible dilemma. If they attempt to marry, they will truly risk everything that matters – family, friends, and fortunes.
