West Mercia Police is keen to hear about young people making a difference in their communities as it begins the search for the Young Good Citizen of 2010.

West Mercia Police is keen to hear about young people making a difference in their communities as it begins the search for the Young Good Citizen of 2010.

First introduced in 1987, the selection process for the 2010 Young Good Citizen Awards has been changed to widen the search for young people aged 18 or under who have displayed immense community spirit over the last 12 months.

All those nominated will receive a Young Good Citizen Certificate from their Local Policing Team and 10 of the nominees will be chosen to go forward to a special awards ceremony at Force Headquarters, Hindlip Hall, near Worcester, in October.

At a gala evening hosted by Chief Constable Paul West, and in partnership with the High Sheriffs of Shropshire and Herefordshire and Worcestershire, one young person will be presented with the award for Young Good Citizen of the Year 2010, which comes with a bursary of £400 to support education, training or their efforts towards gaining employment. In addition, they will be able to nominate a charity to receive a gift of a further £100. The other short-listed nominees will each receive a specially commissioned certificate from the Chief Constable and the High Sheriffs, personally signed by them.

“These awards are given in recognition of young people making the difference in their communities. Too often our society focuses on the negative issues associated with young people, such as under-age drinking and anti-social behaviour, but the reality is that the positive contributions made by numerous young people far outweigh the problems caused by the few.”

Chief Constable Paul West

If you know such a young person, why not nominate them for this year’s award? We are particularly keen to hear about young people who have overcome challenges in their own lives and have still been able to make a difference to others in their community. If young people have worked together, small groups of no more than three may also be nominated.

PLEASE CONTACT ME IF YOU KNOW OF YOUNG PEOPLE IN BROSELEY WHO SHOULD BE NOMINATED FOR THIS AWARD SCHEME

'We wish to state our support for the continuance of the Broseley and Barrow Local Joint Committee in its present form

‘We wish to state our support for the continuance of the Broseley and Barrow Local Joint Committee in its present form. This was one of the original pilot LJCs and is one of the most successful - it has an excellent connection with the local community and has fostered close relations between Broseley Town Council and Barrow Parish Council.
We oppose most vigorously the suggestion that the Broseley and Barrow Local Joint Committee be joined with Much Wenlock. Broseley and Much Wenlock are two very different and separate communities - Broseley is the service centre that serves the Barrow Parish area. We believe that, to join these two LJCs together would fracture the link to our community and risk conflicting priorities among the various representatives.
Broseley is a Market Town with a strong local identity and a strong sense of local history - it needs to retain the current LJC as a voice to combat years of neglect by the former principal authorities.’

For some background information, the Broseley and Barrow LJC has helped many local groups and projects with grants from its funding pot and is supporting local community priorities. We have scrutinised local services and given out information on many issues.

The Mount Nursery will be holding its A.G.M on Thursday the 15th of July. The nursery has celebrated its 15th birthday this year. To mark this event the children (or adults) can purchase a balloon. This will have their name and the nursery contact details attached. The balloon that travels the furthest will be awarded a prize! We will erect a map of the UK to track the distance. The day’s timetable of events are as follows. 2pm A.G.M 2.15 pm Children’s performance. 2.40 Balloon release Before finishing at 3pm feel free to look around the nursery at our current displays. Refreshments are on sale and children will have use of the bouncy castle. We are a charitable organisation that relies on the support of parents, carers and the community.

On Saturday the 19th of June Broseley in Bloom’s Summer Festival will be held in the Victoria Hall and on the Memorial Gardens from 10am to 1pm

On Saturday the 19th of June Broseley in Bloom’s Summer Festival will be held in the Victoria Hall and on the Memorial Gardens from 10am to 1pm. This is a brand new event and it is hoped that many townspeople will participate and come and enjoy themselves. There will be lots going on : children from John Wilkinson School will be maypole dancing, there will be a performance by the junior section of BROADs, Irish musicians will play, art and crafts will be displayed in the Vic, where refreshments will be served, and there will be various stalls inside and out. A fancy dress competition for children is being organised, to be judged by the mayor, Carole Cooper, and prizes will be awarded.

Look out for leaflets and posters around the town for more information, it should all be really good fun, so come along and support the event if you can. Some of us who are old enough remember Broseley’s Carnival, long since gone, perhaps this Festival could replace it ?

As if the morning wasn’t enough, in the afternoon there will be a group of beautiful gardens being opened by green-fingered residents. Admission to them all is £ 2.50 inclusive, and the tickets will be for sale beforehand and on the morning of the Festival. The Friendly Bus will carry people around the scattered gardens or folk can make their own way. There is a map on the ticket, and refreshments will be available at the home of Michael and Gillian Pope, in Dark Lane. Again, there are posters around town with more details.
